These are a pair of Chinese woven baskets used for centuries since the ancient days in China. The pair below are believed to be brought in from China to Malaya before the WW2.
These baskets were popularly used to carry Chinese delicacies and cakes for ceremonial occasions such as Weddings, Birthdays and any other Auspicious Religious functions.
This bigger sized basket was made from woven bamboo strips to carry items like assorted fruits or even a whole roasted Chicken, Goose or Ducks.
This small basket was made from pressed bamboo strips and painted in the traditional red & black lacquer coatings. It was suitable to carry small quantity of cakes and desserts.
How do you managed to keep these baskets so clean with the tiny gaps between the bamboo strips that can keep dust?
ReplyDeleteI bought the above single tier from an antique shop because it was so rare to see a single tier. I used it to decorate during CNY with fresh flowers and mandarin oranges. My cleaning maid gently wipes them every week.
ReplyDeleteThe other brown piece was popular for the old Chinese ceremonial weddings and it was also given to me by the same friend's grandmother before she passed away.
Wow, so you are using the single tier one. Good that it is put to good use.
